Art

The core purpose of the Art and Design Department is for students to learn how to express and communicate meanings and ideas in visual and tactile form. By learning to think and act as artists, designers and craftspeople, they work creatively and intelligently, developing confidence, competence and imagination.

We are committed to engendering an appreciation of art, craft and design across time and cultures, encouraging the critical reflection on their own and other peoples’ work, judging quality, value and meaning.

Students with a high level of ability are encouraged to consider Art & Design as a career pathway, as it is no longer viewed as a frivolous career choice. The Creative Industries in Britain employ over 2 million people and are the second biggest contributor to the National Economy.

We combine teaching of traditional disciplines with use of new media, and provide opportunities for students to take risks and experiment in a purposeful way.

Students in KS3 are taught in mixed ability groups, and in Year 9 can opt to study   Fine Art   (Single Award GCSE) or Applied Art (Double Award GCSE). We follow the AQA syllabuses for Fine Art and Applied Art & Design.
